TRIED & TESTED | MICELLAR WATER

TRIED & TESTED | MICELLAR WATER

Micellar water is one of of my go-to beauty must-haves, for so many reasons… But first up; if you you’re not already addicted, or you’ve never used it before – let me give you a little low-down on what is is, why I love it, all the different ways of using it (other than a part of your cleansing routine) + the products I am loving right now.

Micellar Water is basically made up of micelles which are tiny round balls of cleansing molecules suspended in soft water. The idea is that micelles are attracted to dirt and oil, so it´s able to draw out impurities without drying out the skin (with no need to rinse afterwards); hence why Micellar water can be used as a facial wash, makeup remover and moisturiser all in one. Micellar originates from France, where it was initially used as a substitute for harsh tap water (!). Micellar water is also formulated to be super mild for the skin, and especially ideal for dry and sensitive skin types, as the particular formula was created to not disturb the skin’s natural pH balance, and it´s super gentle and hydrating. Unlike many toners, Micellar water doesn’t any contain alcohol and it never stings.

HOW TO USE

There are so many ways to use Micellar Water – some pretty obvious, and others which you wouldn’t necessarily think of! I am a big fan of anything multi-use, and Micellar Water is just that. If you use it for cleansing, it best to use a cotton ball or pad so that the product can more easily soak up dirt. As much as it might look like water, you will soon realise it doesn’t feel like water. When you sweep it across your face, you might see a little foam residue which dissipates very quickly. Your skin might also feel a tad sticky for a while but that is just momentary. All-in-all, no stickiness, no tingling sensation, no tightening, no dryness, and no irritation. Your skin will feel clean, fresh and very comfortable.

1. Cleanse in the morning
Micellar water can offer a quick and gentle way to get clean skin so that you can start your day with a fresh face.

2. Remove make-up
Micellar water can also be used to remove makeup as a pre-step to your cleansing routine at night. If you are strictly removing your makeup with Micellar water, be sure to focus on the areas of your face with makeup, including your eye area.

3. Cleanse in the evening (after removing make-up)
When used as a general cleanser, Micellar water formulas are light and won’t strip your skin. This makes it a nice, hydrating cleansing option for night time perfect for those with any skin type (but especially for those with dry skin).

4.  Cleanse after a workout
Since Micellar water requires no water to dampen the skin or rinse with, it makes it a great cleansing option to take with you when you are on-the-go or after a workout at the gym.

5. Wash your hands when you’re on the go
If you ever find yourself somewhere without a sink and you want to ensure your hands are clean, a few drops of micellar water will do the trick (just carry micellar water in a spray bottle and rub your hands together to clean).

6. Skin mist
On those days that you are not wearing make-up and would like to freshen your skin, a micellar water mist is perfect. Apply while you are on-the-go or exercising outdoors to freshen skin and to lift off any dirt or pollution.

9. Perfect your make-up
Need a little spot clean after applying your make up? Micellar water is perfect to fix things like a smudged eyeliner, overdrawn brows or lipstick mishaps. Apply micellar water to a q-tip then remove the make up blunder easily.

THE PRODUCTS

I have tried my fare share of Micellar Water throughout the years – and I have to admit, you’ll struggle to find a bad one (at least I haven´t!), as the ingredients are often so pure and close to water, and suitable for most skin types. However there are of course ones which are better than others, and some of which that are more easy to use on a day-to-day basis. Here are the ones I am loving right now…

triedandtested-2-of-3

First up is Avène Cleanance Micellar Water – a super gentle formula, that utilises naturally active spring water to cleanse and purify blemish prone skin. It also helps to regulate sebum production, remove all traces of dirt and makeup, as well as delivering a deep cleanse (no need to rinse). I really love this product, as your skin is always left feeling so light, re-freshed and squeaky clean.

Gently refresh your complexion with the Elemis Smart Cleanse Micellar Water – to help eliminate dirt and impurities without over-drying the skin, or creating any uncomfortable tightness to your complexion (a good quality Micellar Water should never do this). With natural surfactants from Rosehip Seed Oil, Apple Amino Acids and Organic English Rose Water – the combinations cleans, soothes and rejuvenate skin. Your complexion is left clear, smooth and rejuvenated.

The L’Oréal Paris Micellar Water combines micelles in water that capture impurities, with Glycerin which moisturises and soothes, for effective cleansing which is gentle on the skin. Ideal to use as a make-up remover to wipe away even waterproof mascara, without too much rubbing or rinsing. Good value for money and it certainly does what it says on the tin.

I am a big fan of the Simple Micellar Face Cleanser, as it´s targeted to more sensitive skin. Enriched with lots of skin-loving ingredients to deliver an effective cleanse without stripping moisture. Infused with Triple Purified Water, the micellar water effortlessly dissolves make-up and prevents irritation whilst Vitamin B3 combats dryness. Leaving the skin feeling so soft, smooth and fully moisturised. If I had to choose, this is one of my personal favourites.

These are my current favourites… Which ones do you love?

Excellent post, v helpful, thank you. Only today I was on the hunt for a micellar water having heard the benefits, unfortunately I was so overwhelmed with the choice out there that I didn’t buy anything! Will give the ‘Simple’ one a shot.
