THE VITAMINS & SUPPLEMENTS I TAKE

THE VITAMINS & SUPPLEMENTS I TAKE

I’ve always been pretty vigilant with my daily supplements and vitamins, but even more so now that I’m a mummy, as I don’t have time to be ill! I was left feeling super weak after the pregnancy (naturally), as well as my immune system and gut health being pretty shot after 4 rounds of antibiotics in the past 6 months. As I’m also still exclusively breastfeeding (for nearly 8 months now), it’s crucial that I stay on top of my health (which sadly wasn’t the case in the early months of motherhood). I’m pleased to say that I’m finally back on track and starting to feel myself again, all thanks to the following supplements below…

1. PROBIOTICS & GUT HEALTH
I’ve been having this on a daily basis since the last few months of my pregnancy, and albeit it’s an investment (good quality and fresh Kefir, always is), it’s been so worth it! Active, unpasteurised and fresh goats milk straight from the farm, which has worked wonders on my gut health (especially after several rounds of antibiotics). I have a monthly subscription with Chuckling Goat, which means it’s constantly in my fridge, and I always have a glass every morning first thing (on an empty stomach). The benefits? It’s a great source of calcium, as well as vitamin B12, magnesium, vitamin K2, biotin and folate, boosting with enzymes and probiotics… (and Rio loves it too). Only word of warning: as it’s so active and live, I have had many bottles pour over everywhere when I open it, so be careful when doing so!

On top of the daily Kefir, I have also been taking BioCare BioAcidophilus Forte – which is a premium strength probiotic (hence the hefty price tag), containing 30 billion live probiotic bacteria per capsule. I invested in this after my fourth round of antibiotics, and I’ve been feeling so great since taking them.

2. VITAMIN C & IMMUNE SYSTEM
I have never been so often sick in my life, since I’ve been breastfeeding. Obviously it’s been the best thing for Rio, but my immune system has been so weak and it’s just been one thing after the other (two rounds of mastitis, chest infection, tonsillitis and numerous colds)… A friend kindly recommended this power cocktail of Vitamin C: 1 teaspoon of the NutriBiotic Ascorbic Acid Crystalline Powder, mixed with a drop of apple cider vinegar (I love the Daylesford Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, but any good quality version will do) poured into a large glass of water, every morning. I have it near enough every day (20-30 minutes after my glass of Kefir), and although it’s incredibly sour and sharp, I haven’t been sick since taking it!

3. PROTEIN BOOST
Since I’ve started working out, and especially whilst being extra tired from lack of sleep, I’ve been pulling out all the stops with my protein shakes, which I have either before or after a workout, depending on how I feel. Whilst pregnant, I was unable to have any protein powders, so I am happy to go back to one of my favourites, The Super Elixir Nourishing Protein. I love this vegan-friendly plant based powder because it uses all-natural ingredients to support liver function, maintain blood sugar levels and has digestive enzymes to boost your metabolism (as well as it being delicious).

For a bit of variation, I have been trying a few other brands, including Vida Glow’s Beauty Recovery powder in Banana & Cinnamon flavour (it’s as delicious as it sounds), which I always take post workout, or when my body is feeling particularly sore and tired. It’s designed to assist with recovery, whilst feeding cells the essential vitamins and minerals to repair, and rebuild and strengthen. Rich in protein, it’s also great for your hair, skin and nails, using only certified and organic ingredients.

I also like Missfits Protein Multitasker Sachets – which are ideal for women on-the-go – made from high quality vegan protein blends in various flavours – ideal for shakes, blended in your porridge or even baking.

4. ALKALINE SUPER GREENS

The Super Elixir Greens powder has been a staple supplement of mine for the last four years, and although it’s not something I have every day at the moment (due to breastfeeding), I tend to have it at least every other week, blended in with my favourite green smoothie. It’s one of the only green powders I have come across which actually tastes nice, and I feel like it really helps with my metabolism, skin and energy levels. It’s also great to take after you’ve been ill, or you’re just feeling sluggish or under the weather, as it helps bring your body back to a more alkaline state (alongside a good diet as well, of course).

5. COLLAGEN

I swear by Vida Glow Marine Collagen for finally giving me more lengths and fullness to my otherwise dry and brittle hair. This natural powder supplement, is bursting full of protein and amino acids, and a total superfood for your hair, skin and nails. It helps replenish your collagen levels with muscle recovery, so it’s another ideal supplement post workout, and a real vitamin boost, with mineral rich mango, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, Pectin, Phosphorus, Potassium and Magnesium. I always pop a scoop in with my my protein shakes or smoothies.

6. MULTIVITAMINS
I had been looking for a good quality multivitamin which was safe to take during breastfeeding for ages, and thankfully I was recommended the BioCare BioCare Methyl Pregnancy Multivitamin – a high potency formulation with active folic acid (as well as whole load of other vitamins), to help support you during pregnancy and breastfeeding. As I was in a total bubble and daze after having Rio, I simply forgot about taking care of myself in the months following the birth (no wonder I was getting sick all the time!), but I finally got my act together a few months back, and since taking these, I have still not been sick… Long may it continue! These are an absolute non-negotiable, and I take them every single day.
