Review: Jason Vale 7-Day Juice Cleanse

Review: Jason Vale 7-Day Juice Cleanse

I am so proud to say that my 7-day juice cleansing is now done! It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, which to be honest – I didn’t think I had the patience, willpower, or time for. But in all honesty, who can’t do anything for just seven days? Preparation is key, and I would definitely recommend getting the literature a few weeks in advance (from whichever juice programme you decide to go for) and study it properly, so you can both mentally, and physically prepare for what you are about to put your body through.

I decided to test the Jason Vale programme – The Juice Master Diet: 7lbs in 7 Days – after reading some great reviews and recommendations from friends. My goals? To cleanse, feel more energised and loose a few kilos. Well, I am happy to say, I did all of that, but the journey wasn’t easy…

7-DAY CLEANSE JUICE DIARY

Daily Requirements:

– 5 juices a day (morning, mid-morning, lunch, early dinner, late dinner).
– Hot water with lemon (morning, before juice).
– Morning, afternoon and early evening exercises (from 20-40min per session).
– Minimum 8-hours sleep.
Optional: Hot water fennel/mint or hot apple juice w/cinnamon (evening, after juice).

Tools:

– A juicer; I used Philips Juice Maker, now £69.99 (which I can highly recommend!). It’s not too messy, and relatively easy to clean.
– A decent knife, chopping board, peeler (for the lime) and strainer (to wash your vegetables and fruit).
– 2-3 flasks (if you’re planning on bringing them on-the-go) – I use Sigg bottles.

DAY 1

I decided to start on a Saturday, when I had more time to prepare and also get used to it. If you have all the ingredients to hand, the juicing process is super simple! I actually felt fine in the morning, before and after the gym, but towards the afternoon, I was feeling very tired, lightheaded and weak. Surprisingly no headaches all day. I felt refreshed after I had my early dinner juice and had a long soak in the bath. I was too tired to have my late dinner juice after this. Just before bedtime, I had warm apple juice and cinnamon, delicious! I slept like a baby.

Tip: Prepare all the ingredients all together in advance on the chopping board – it makes life so much easier!

Note: Be careful with the amount of wheatgrass you put in some of the juices; I messed up the measurements on the morning juice and added far too much – which was rather painful for the stomach! Other than that, the juices are pretty tasty and sweet.

3

DAY 2

The morning juice tasted much better with only one teaspoon wheatgrass (thank god)! I felt ok in the morning, and managed a 60-minute Body Pump class, without feeling weak or tired during. However, I did have a big dip in the afternoon again. It didn’t exactly help that I had a big brunch planned with a group of friends – the temptations were killing me! I felt a bit more revived after I had the early dinner juice (which again, pretty yummy!). I swapped my late evening juice for one with banana in it (you are allowed to swap and change, as long as you keep the basis of the juice with either pineappe, apple or carrot), as I was feeling a bit dizzy and craved the yoghurt/banana combination. I skipped my hot evening drink, as I drank the evening juice so late. Again, I slept great.

Tip: During this week, try to avoid any situations where you are surrounded by delicious food, especially in the earlier stages (the hardest period).

DAY 3

Monday morning. I got up nice and early and felt really refreshed (a rare account for me!), and prepared all my juices for work. My stomach felt a lot flatter. In general, the morning was fine and I had normal amounts of energy, not feeling too groggy. At around 11am I was flagging and feeling very hungry, so I had my mid-morning juice. After this, I was hungry again before lunch time, and was relieved I had the banana/yoghurt juice concoction. Again, it didn’t fill me up for long, and by 2.30-3pm I was feeling really faint and dizzy. I don’t know how, but I actually managed a ‘Body Blitz’ class at my local gym, which surprisingly made me feel better?! In general though, this day was hard and with evening plans after, I was quite dizzy and weak, and my mood swings were all over the place.

Tip: You can prepare your juices the evening before, to save time in the mornings! Just remember to seal the juices in an airtight flask/container/bottle and just squeeze some lime or lemon in your juice, to keep it fresh.

DAY 4

I didn’t manage the recommended 8-hours sleep (due to late night work commitments the evening before), so I was really tired when I woke up. My stomach also felt a bit bloated this morning, which was unexpected. I felt really groggy all morning, so didn’t manage any morning exersize. I had a busy day planned at work, and had little energy. Again, I had an afternoon dip, and had to drink my early dinner juice earlier. I actually ended up drinking more juices today (6-7, instead of 5) as I was quite hungry and in need of extra energy. This was by far the hardest day for me. I went to bed early and fell asleep within seconds.

4

DAY 5

I woke up more energised, and with a flatter stomach (thank god!). This was the first day of feeling ‘normal’. I had loads of stuff going on all day, and felt much stronger and clear headed. My mood swings seemed to have stopped (thank god!). I was still enjoying all the juices. I attended a high intensity aerobics class and managed it just fine. I went to bed early and again, fell asleep straight away.

DAY 6

This was my most challenging day in terms of what I had going on, with an all-day work event (in killer heels for 12 hours = not ideal) – but it actually went fine in the end! I had a few moments of feeling slightly dizzy, but I made sure to drink all my juices and loads of water throughout the day, and was feeling good most of the time. I also had a big evening event/party to attend (wearing even higher heels!) and was initially fine for the first few hours, then my body just said stop – understandably, and in hindsight, a lot of this probably had to do with me running around like crazy all day as well! I couldn’t wait to hit the sack when I finally got home.

Tip: Try not to plan anything too strenuous during your cleanse week!

DAY 7

Last day, and I have to admit, thinking back, I actually stopped counting down to the end after day 4. I am not saying; ‘YES, I can finally eat!’, it’s rather; ‘YES, I did it!’. This was a great day in general, and again, I felt normal (and even energised!). I also have to say that after 6 days of juicing – I’m still loving the recipes and taste (even my fiancee said they tasted nice, and he’s not a big fan of anything ‘overly’ healthy!). I finished off my last day with a good session in the gym and a relaxing Friday night with a hot bath, and my Friday treat in the programme, Sherbet Lemonade.

SUMMARY

To conclude, I would firstly like to say, this was not easy (and I am someone with a lot of willpower and stamina.) I hate quitting things, and I knew after reading the very motivational book by Jason Vale, I would not quit. Looking back, I probably should have trialled a 3-day or 5-day cleanse programme first, but hey, I wanted a challenge. And this was by far, the most challenging thing I ever put my body and mind through.

There was many ups and downs (mostly downs in the initial stages of the programme) – but the one surprising thing throughout the whole process, was that I hardly thought about food or missed chewing something solid! Of course, I was very tempted on day 2 at the sit down Sunday lunch, but other than that I’ve been fine (just making sure I didn’t put myself in any other similar situations like that again!). The juices have also been surprisingly delicious, which was the nicest surprise. As there is a lot of pineapple/apple juice combos, many of the juices are quite sweet (which at times, can give you bit of a sugar rush), but in general, they kept me relatively full (although I ended up drinking slightly more/less on a few occasions.)

My main goal was to cleanse and feel more energised, which I did towards the end! I do suffer from occasional bloating and light heartburn after meals, so it was a delight when I didn’t suffer from this the whole week. I also slept like a baby each night and woke up relatively easy at 6am all mornings (to my standards, that’s early), to prepare all my juices.

In general, it’s made me really review and think about my food choices. I didn’t miss any heavy food or naughty treats, as the juices were quite sweet anyways – and I’m excited to start eating more green, consciously and nutritious!

Note: I didn’t manage all the daily 3 x exercises that were in the programme – it was physically impossible with my work hours and schedule – I did however manage some kind of gym class/exercises once a day.

RESULT

Now, to the weight loss. I am aware I am not overweight; I generally just want to look healthy and fit. I did however want to shed some pounds for an upcoming holiday (in-line with a healthy exercise plan to tone up).

My final weight loss figure: 3.8kg / 8lb 6. Please note a lot of this was water weight.

22

NEXT STEP

Phase 2: The Turbo Charge Plan (also by Jason Vale) of the cleansing process, for the next 21 days. This consists of a diet of juice (often for breakfast), salad or juice for lunch, and a nice light dinner (i.e fish, brown rice, quinoa) for dinner. So a lot of lean protein, good fat (avocado, live yoghurt) and good carbs (sweet potato, dark rye, brown/wholegrain rice, etc.) So in plain, just simple and healthy living – pretty easy after a week of just juices!

MG_001858
Hope you’ve enjoyed reading my diary and review. Please drop me a comment if you have any other questions about the juicing, or just general feedback! I would love to hear from you.

Note: After a lot of similar questions in the comments field – I would like to clarify, in my opinion – this cleanse diet is not for long-term weight loss results. This is merely a kick-start into a new way of eating and healthier lifestyle; continuing to consume nutritious and healthy food, with regular exercise. You can’t just live on juices forever to keep the weight down!

I was so interested to read this after following your updates on it. You definitely have amazing willpower! To feel groggy and dizzy and still manage your exercise practically every day after long days of work must have been so challenging. I love the sound of this as a kick start to just a healthy regime alongside an exercise plan as you say, rather than in an attempt to lose weight. I’d like to give it a try – but think doing a 3 day trial first would be best for me! Congratulations! X

      Hi Olivia,

      Thank you!

I am glad you enjoyed reading it! I think a lot of people were quite curious to see how it went, and my day-to-day experience with it – rather than just a general overview. It is hard, and it really tested my willpower. So I would probably recommend the 3-day one first to see how you get on – as you said, it’s not easy doing it alongside work and exercise.

Let me know how you get on if you decide to do it!

Thanks Sally! It is pretty hardcore, so an easier option would be to ease yourself slowly into it with a juice for breakfast or lunch, then go onto the 3-day cleanse first, if you ever were to try it!

Thanks, can’t wait to get away!

Well done Anneli! I love the idea of a juice diet but don’t know whether I’d have as much willpower as you in all honesty, especially if everyone around me was eating normally. Love the sound of the Turbo Charge Plan though – definitely going to look into this book.

      Thanks Hannah!

Yes, the Turbo Charge Plan is great, as you can combine juices with a healthy and lean diet, much easier – and also a great way to ease yourself into a wholly juice plan, if you wanted to try it later on.

Hi Anneli, I read this post with great interest and saw your Instagram updates about the juice cleanse. Can I ask how much the ingredients cost you when you went shopping for them? I’ve had a look at the list and it’s a lot of stuff!! Was it expensive?

      Hi Lisa,

I am afraid I can’t remember exactly how much it all cost, but the fruit part wasn’t expensive (depending on where you source it from of course). The only initial (costly) investment you have to make, is all the supplements (spirulina, wheatgrass, probiotics, etc) – which I chose to have in my juices (you can do this juice program without the supplements).

Good luck with the juicing if you decide to do it!

      Hi Tracy,
I’ve never actually had them without supplements – so I can’t really compare, but all I know is my morning juice (which both my partner and I drink) is packed with supplements, and always gives us tons of energy!

I would suggest chlorofyll, spirulina, power greens, wheatgrass and probiotic :)

    Hi Anneli,

I’m gearing up for a juice cleanse as I have a big event next weekend. Just trying to decide between the 3 day and 5 day option. 8lbs is quite a significant weight loss in a week! May I ask what weight you were pre juice cleanse as you’re very slim to begin with! Also what height? My goal is for for health and a flatter stomach than weight loss per se but I’d be interested to know! I’m around 5ft 5 and 8st 6. Thanks! EM

      June 28, 2013 / 22:13

      Hi Milly,

I did the 7 day option to do a proper spring cleanse – not really to loose any weight. I would probably recommend the 3-day one, to start off with! I would recommend the 5 or 7-day one, only if you are looking to really detox and cleanse your whole body. For a quick fix (for an event) – the 3-day would probably be better I would say.

      Good luck!

I’m here for motivation. I googled 7lbs in 7 days -day 3 to see if anyone else is having as much trouble as I am. I’m so hungry!! I’m following the schedule to the nose and I have not been this hungry the other days. I’m wanting to give up. A bacon cheese burger sounds sooooooo good right now. : / How did you cope?

      July 18, 2013 / 09:29

      Hi April,

I know, it is SO hard – and Day 3 was by far the worst – but think how amazing you will feel once it’s all over and how proud you will be haven completed 7-days! It is by far my biggest achievement – when it comes to my mind/body. Stay in there – it will only get easier from here on!

      Anneli

P.S – Your food cravings are only in your head, you don’t actually need the bacon burger, as you are getting all the nutritions you need from the juice.

Jason Vale recommends a couple of fruits in times like these, he calls them Hunger SOS. Such fruits include avocados and bananas. However, you can only take one per day! Please do not exceed, so as to reap the benefits of the programme. For me, I just live with the hunger, because I desperately need that bikini body LOL!

Hi there!! I actually followed the plan a few weeks ago with the same symptoms as you and by the end felt great and lost 6-7 lbs,, however!! I made the mistake of failing on the phase 2 turbo plan, due to personal/family issues and within about 5 days of eating normally gained it back!! I now feel like I’m going to give it another go and stick to th phase 2 as i want to kick start my weight loss and feel better.. My worry is that is it possible to do this plan and carry on losing weight and keeping it off??? As I feel like it’s a bit of a crash diet and it’s going to be a round about of as soon as you eat a peanut you will gain the lbs back!!! I would like your view on this please!! Thank you x

    • AnneliWIBT
      July 29, 2013 / 18:46

      Hi Jana,

It’s a tricky one. Obviously, a lot of the weight you loose is water, so it’s natural to gain it back on. It is of course important to continue sticking to a clean diet afterwards to maintain the result, but I didn’t really use the juicing to loose weight – just to cleanse. I would suggest kick-starting with a 3-day detox to get back into it again, then jump onto the phase 2 part, and see how you get on. Remember to just keep moving as much as you can throughout it all, that should, combined with the clean diet, keep the weight down.

When that said, I think the juicing works best to cleanse, rather than keep the weight down. It’s great to kick-start a healthy eating regime though!

Good luck and do let me know how you get on!

Actually you can get all the protein and carbs you need in a vegetable and fruit diet. Animal protein is not the only source of protein nor pastas, rice, bread, potatoes the only source of carbohydrates. Look it up. Its about eating the right combinations.

I read your review with great interest. Well done for getting through it.
My goal would be to flatten my stomach as this is an area I’ve always struggled with especially after giving birth over 4 years ago. I’m not over weight, I just want to flatten my stomach and tone up with exercise. Would you recommend the 3 or 5 day programme?
    I’d really appreciate your advice.

      Hi!
If your manage to maintain a clean/healthy diet and regular exersize alongside a juice detox – both 3 and 5 day are good, however the longer the detox, the better for your body (inside and out) – no more than 7 days though. I really noticed a difference on day 5 and 6 – but as mentioned, if you’re just using the detox as a cleanser and rather focusing on your general diet and exersize in the aftermath, you should see a noticeable difference and keep the weight down (and the stomach flat!).
Hope that helps and GOOD LUCK :)

,Hi there, I am reading up on this challenge as I need to lose 11.6 kg. I have no rush to do so (which is great). It sounds like we have a similar work schedule, I can’t go to the gym 3x a day! So, if you managed to lose that, it motivates me loads as my job is fairly active and I don’t have time to snack. Do you think I should give it a try?
    Great work, as well!

      Hi,

      Thanks!

I would definitely give it a go, to kick start something more long-term and sustainable. When you do the juicing, you will initially loose some weight, but a lot of this is water, so the weight will go up again after a few days. So, it’s important you continue a healthy and clean diet after the juicing days (it’s the second phase – if you decide to follow Jason Vale’s programme, it’s called The Turbo Charge Plan) with regular exercise – however much you have time for and can manage. I did a lot of swimming and lighter level of exercise during the juicing – I really think this paid off :)

      Good luck!

      – Anneli

I’m on Day 10 of my juice cleanse and feel pretty amazing! My aim is to inspire others to do the same :) I’ve been so busy, been doing my normal gym workouts and the first three days are the worse you have to get over. I’m going to keep going as it seems really easy and my body and mind are loving it! I’ve lost 5Kgs so far and it’s also winter here, so if I can do anyone can. I have two of my guy friends doing it to that have never done one and they are also feeling great. One even sent me a message last night saying he had a random burst of energy and had to do dance do chin ups and pushups to get it out. You can read my 10 day blog here http://myorganiclife.info/featured/10-day-juicing-cleanse/ and along with your insightful article it might get others to give it a go :) I’ll have to check out this turbo charge plan too!

Hi! I really loved reading your experience and it inspired me to start! I have finished the 7 days and I feel great and lost weight. I am doing phase 2 now but I am still really worrie I gain it back. For breakfast it says we should have a veggie-based smoothie, does this mean i can only pick ones with a lot of veggies? My favourite is the Passion 4 Juice Master but it doesn’t contain any vegetables. Does that mean i can’t have it?

I also tried this on Monday. I did well Monday, Tuesday I felt rather weak, Wednesday I could hardly run around the agility course with my dog and had to sit in between my go. I felt so weak that i broke the juice diet. it wasnt that i felt hungry, not at all, nor particularly craved anything (i eat pretty healthy anyway) but I couldnt cope with the total exhaustion. I very active in my life and for me i just felt so tired. I DO love the juicing though so aim to juice one day a week from now on. Well done you for completing it!

One day a week is perfect! 7 days is so hard – maybe try a 3-day cleanse? Good luck :)

    Hi,
I am in day 3 of 7lbs in 7 days and I’m chewing my own fist with hunger! I have caved in and had some cashews. Feeling good though, that I’ve almost got to the halfway point :-)

You can download an app for a couple of ££ and of course you can get the book on Amazon. They have all the ingredients you need.

Hi. I had a local lady supply me the juices which seem to be pretty similar to the Jason Vale recipes but she makes a veg soup for the evening “juice” (one that you heat up which is nice for Winter!!). Has anybody heard of this or is she perhaps doing a different venture!? Thanks for your help!
    Cheers!

That sounds pretty good, especially for the colder winter months, where your body needs more fuel, vitamins and vegetables. It´s all about giving your digestive system a bit of a break, so sticking with liquid for the duration of three days (via juice or soup) is great. Hope that helps!

Is it possible to make all your juices the day before or do they need to be made fresh at that meal time?

    • January 11, 2015 / 21:39

Yes, for sure! That saves a lot of time. Although the juice isn’t as fresh of course, but it´s still fine!

My experience was eating nearly a whole pineapple every day, along with 6 apples and a whole lemon was giving me severe stomach acid and mouth sores. After day 2, I switched to my own intuition and juiced on broccoli, spinach and kale with ginger, carrots and apples to lower the acid and calm my digestive system. I figured that the 7 Day juice fast just wasn’t nutritionally sound and I relied on my own nutritional knowledge.
My other concern was all that fruit sugar going straight to the blood four times a day.
I’d be interested to know if anyone knows what qualifies Jason Vale as a nutritionist? Not knocking him, its a serious question that everyone should ask before committing to a 7 day juice fast with anyone.

Anyone can become a nutritionist with minimal effort or knowledge just google it! The amounts of sugar are far from healthy. Not to mention the other side effects fasting tlike this can cause. Asthma sufferers steer clear!

I have just had my day 8 brekkie! and throughly enjoyed! I agree with most of your comments… the sweetness was just overwhelming at the end. As you say, a great kick-start…and a gentle reminder! I’m craving lots of interesting healthy foods for the next few weeks!

    Hi Anneli

I loved reading your post. I totally agree with your last comment that it is a kick-start into a new way of eating and healthier lifestyle. I recently did the 5lbs in 5 days cleanse and it has really made me think a lot more consciously about what I am eating now.

    Hello,
This is an important question to ask and I wish it was covered in this blog, really disappointed that it wasn’t covered. As it could be a make or break for some wanting to try any type of this cleanse.
How did it affect your bowels movements, a lot of folks cannot do any type cleanse due to the loose bowls a lot of fruits and veggies may give.
    Thx

Hello Aneneli. Great job sticking to it for 7 days, I love your article I will try doing it to.
