I have known Alex since my early days working as a PR Assistant and she was a Fashion Assistant at Red Magazine (still my favourite mag FYI). We instantly hit it off, and even though there has been a lot of changes since that time (she is currently killing it as one of UK’s most prominent and popular fashion blogger/Instagrammer and freelance stylist), and I quit my job 3 1/2 years ago to pursue a similar dream – I now count her as one of my closest friends within this industry – someone who not only is incredibly genuine, true to herself and so kind, but also ever-inspiring and a total girl boss (who I am sure we can all take some lead from!). Naturally, I am very honoured to have caught up with her for my second instalment of my new Power 10 interview series – and hope you’ll find it just as inspiring as I did!
1. WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE FRUGALITY?
The Frugality is me fumbling through the fashion world on a regular budget. I wanted to be a real, accessible voice in the fashion industry. I don’t have new clothes everyday, I have to save up for luxuries and as soon as I started I found loads of like minded women felt the same, and so it began!
2. DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS?
Creative, Organised and (a little bit) Bossy.
3. YOUR CAN’T-LIVE-WITHOUT ACCESSORY?
Can I have Lip Balm? If not then my Vans trainers. I love wearing them with floaty dresses.
4. FAVOURITE PLACE YOU’VE EVER VISITED, AND WHY?
Japan. We went for our honeymoon and everything blew us away: the people, the culture, the temples and, of course, the food.
5. POSITIVES & NEGATIVES ABOUT WORKING IN BLOGGING AND SOCIAL MEDIA?
Positives: Its a lot more social than you think. I’ve made some great friends (Anneli included). I love working to my own schedule and deadline and just putting up whatever content I feel is relevant, whether that’s a new bag I’ve bought or thoughts behind renovation work – everyday is different.
Negatives: There’s lots of invisible hours that go into running a blog. Especially when there’s only one of you. Most people see my glamorous life on Instagram but don’t see me working until midnight on all my work and business admin.
6. WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
I love being my own boss. But I’ve also just learnt not to beat myself up about not achieving everything I put down for me to do that day. I think I sometimes forget that being you’re own boss means you can let yourself off occasionally.
7. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO UNWIND AFTER A LONG DAY WORKING?
Go to bed! I rarely get an early night. But I do love a good bath and watching 80s movies with my husband.
8. BEING YOUR OWN BOSS, HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO STAY MOTIVATED AND CREATIVE?
I don’t know really. I think its just in my blood – I get inspired by just walking around and being in my own head. I’m constantly taking in ideas from my surroundings, something I learnt from working at magazines.
9. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS CAREER WISE?
I try not to have too much of a plan. Five years ago this job didn’t even exist for me, so I’m excited where life and work will take me.
10. FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR TEENAGE SELF KNOWING WHAT YOU KNOW NOW?
You’ll never be good at science but that’s okay.
