HOW TO GET NATURAL BEACH WAVES IN 3 EASY STEPS

HOW TO GET NATURAL BEACH WAVES IN 3 EASY STEPS

I have never been a big fan of anything that takes too long when it comes to my hair or make-up (or lots of other things, for that matter). Granted, I am pretty impatient; I just don’t make time for a lot of fussing when it comes to my every day hair and make-up – hence why I am a big fan of a more natural look when it comes to my day-time look.

Curling my hair is not something I have done a lot in the past – for several reasons; time, skill and the finished look. I had never got round to mastering it properly (or just too impatient to practice) and seldom liked the way it turned out. Being a regular customer at Sassoon for several years now, I have picked up a lot of tips and tricks from them – one of which being the way they so beautifully style and tong my hair, always making it look so natural, never too glossy or overdone; which is always the look I am after. So, after watching and learning – and finally making time for trial and error at home – I have managed to find a routine that works for me, in 3 simple steps. Its quick, easy and gives me those natural tousled locks. Perfect.

STEP 1: PREPARE

Find what works for you; from what product you use to prep your hair pre-tonging, the right brush to give you volume, to the correct tools that you prefer.

I wash my hair, towel dry it and brush it out with my trusted Tangle Teezer. I then add a couple of pumps of Purology Strength Cure Fabulous Lengths, which protects and prevents breakage, a few drops of the SP Luxe Oil, which adds moisture, smoothness and helps enhance the curls, and then distribute a few drops of Original & Mineral Frizzy Logic Shine Serum, which also adds smoothness and helps combat that unwanted frizz! I then let my hair dry naturally. Before I start tonging, I spray the Redken Iron Shape to further protect the hair and then I spray the Percy & Reed Dry Instant Volumising Spray throughout the hair, which adds texture and volume, and really helps with the hold of the curls.

I’ve been testing out the Sapphire Curling Wand from U.S brand Irresistible Me, which offers eight (!) different interchangeable ceramic barrels – from tight curls, ringlet curls, spiral curls, large and bouncy curls, to beachy and and wavy curls. As I said, I haven’t curled my hair a lot, so this brand is one of the first I have tried on myself, and so far, so good. They heat up really quickly (within 20 seconds), with a variable temperature control. It also comes in a heat-proof pouch, which is perfect for travels and on-the-go, as well as a heat-resistant glove (although I personally prefer doing it without).

STEP 2: WORK YOUR MAGIC

Once your hair is all prepped and dry, you can start working your magic! After several years of trial and error, I’ve (just about) got the hang of it.

I choose a medium sized barrel, and begin by holding the wand at a 45-degree angle. I start near my roots, wrap the top of my hair around the wand and hold it in place for a minute, then gently loosen the hair and let is slip. I start from the front and work my way around to the back on each side. If I am short of time, I wrap larger sections of my hair, and hold it for 1-2 minutes per section.

Tip: If you want loose, natural looking waves, choose a curling iron with a large barrel; for tighter waves, choose one with a smaller barrel. The straighter, thicker and glossier hair you have the tighter you want your curls to be (as they won’t hold as long).

STEP 3: SHAKE IT OUT

To achieve those natural beachy waves and avoid that glossy look – you need to ruffle up those curls a bit! After the hair has cooled down for a few minutes, I use my fingers to tousle my hair and loosen the waves. Voila!

Tip: To define those waves more clearly, use your preferred mousse or sea salt spray as you tousle, and if desired – finish off the look with a hair spray, which will help hold your waves in place!
