DECORATING FOR AUTUMN

DECORATING FOR AUTUMN

SHOP THE POST

Autumn is by far my favourite season of the year. It’s certainly the cosiest, with all the leaves changing colour and the colder temperatures setting in. Although I’m a self-confessed water baby, I always look forward to Autumn the most. Especially after the long and steaming summer we’ve just had, it feels so good reaching for chunky knits and hibernating inside in front of the fire with a big mug of tea. I also love this season because of the fresh air and all the incredible colours, which is also why it’s the time that I’m the most inspired when it comes to my home. Every season is an excuse to re-decorate. Nothing too drastic or crazy; just adding a few new pieces, textures and colours, to add a bit more warmth and cosy feeling to the rooms you spend the most time in…

As I said, just simple and small (and inexpensive) changes to your home, can make all the difference. The easiest way to do this in my opinion, is getting new cushion covers and blankets, updating your walls with new prints, and bringing some more accessories and trinkets to the room, to make it feel more homely. I was in the middle of re-thinking our front lounge room and the sofa snug in our kitchen, when one of my absolute go-to lifestyle websites for handmade and vintage pieces, Etsy, got in touch wanting me to decorate some rooms for Autumn (perfect timing, as my creative juices were already flowing!). Etsy is a huge market place and a great spot to find unique, one-of-kind and beautiful artisan pieces – in other words, my absolute idea of heaven. Not only is it a great way of supporting small and independent businesses, but you’re also being able to acquire pieces unlike anything else – which in turn adds more character to your home decor.

So without further ado, let’s go shopping!

The first (and main) room I wanted to tackle, was the front lounge, which is a place we like to spend a lot of time in during the colder months. It’s always been a very serene, cool and calm room, so I was more than ready to add a bit more colour, warmth and depth to the space. Accents of dusty pink, cream and grey are the main shades, combined with a mixture of different textures, such as linen, wool, basket, cotton, velvet, wood and brass.

I love mixing and clashing prints, colours and textures in general – which I think is actually quite easy to do, as long as you keep it all within the same tonal colour palette. With the cushions, I opted for 3 new styles – all woven in traditional African mud cloth print (love this so much), and I’m so happy with the simple, yet eclectic addition to the sofa.

There is a touch of brass in near enough every single room in our house. It’s my favourite type of metal, and I love adding the gold accent together with the otherwise minimalistic and neutral colour palette in each room. Again, it adds warmth and elegance, and I think having just small pops of it within a room, can really pull together a space. I adore this vintage brass tray I picked up from Etsy – as it’s vintage, it’s one of a kind, which makes it even more special. The tray looks great on top of the velvet pouffe, and doubles up as a drinks holder (shop all brass trays here).

I love baskets. Not only do they look great in a room, they’re also so useful for so many things – such as storing magazines and books, blankets or to even house my favourite plants. This handwoven basket is so sturdy, a great colour and the perfect size to keep all my favourite magazines together.

A chunky blanket is a lounge essential for Autumn, and I’m so glad I invested in this supersized grey throw, made from 100% merino wool. It’s super soft and cosy, not to mention huge (perfect for a family sofa snuggle), and adds that real homely and comfortable feeling to the room.

I have mentioned before about prints being one of my go-to inexpensive ways to make a real difference in a room. Seeing as I have had the same 6 square prints for over 3 years now in this room (also from Etsy), there was definitely time to change this up! As I wanted to add more warmth and colour to the room, I decided to do this with the prints too – which are a total mix match of styles, but still in keeping with the overall feel of the room style and palette.

Non-interior related, but just as a little FYI – Etsy also do the most amazing selection of Levi’s vintage jeans (and you all know how much I love my denim!).

The room we spend the most time in, is the open-plan kitchen and lounge at the back of the house. It’s such a bright and fresh space, and I have always wanted to keep it that way, in terms of colour and style. In the corner of the room is where our lounging area is, and with surrounding white walls, a neutral sofa and row of tonal cushions, it’s a really serene and calm space (on one side at least, as the other side is Rio’s very colourful play area!).

For my Autumn re-fresh in this room, I added some new cushions to the sofa – with lots of texture and depth, to make it feel really homely and comfortable (even though the colour palette is still minimal and neutral). I love the combination of the plain linen and frilled linen, together with the white furry cushion, making it feel like such an inviting place to sit down and lounge in. I love how with just a simple addition of some new cushions, it can really transform the feel of the space.

I love a good pouffe, and this grey knitted style adds even more texture to this corner snug. It’s the final touch to make this room complete for long and relaxing Autumn days at home – basically, when I’m in my absolute element.
