5 WAYS TO KICKSTART A HEALTHIER NEW YEAR

5 WAYS TO KICKSTART A HEALTHIER NEW YEAR

A new year, bring fresh beginnings – and new opportunities to re-set and re-focus towards a happier, healthier you. On top of my New Years Resolutions, I´ve also compiled these 5 top tips to get you started!

1. EAT CONSCIOUSLY

Be it local, organic or seasonal produce (or all three); 2016 is the year to stop eating mindlessly, choosing your food wisely, and consuming gracefully. Not only will you feel and look better when opting for whole and in-season grocery shopping; you´re helping the environment too. It´s never too late to start, every little counts!

Read more about my thoughts on choosing local, organic or seasonal here.

2. FIND AN EXERCISE WHICH WORKS FOR YOU

One can spend too much time working out just because you have to, not necessarily because you want to. Make 2016 the year of finding one, or two (or three) exercise types which you actually enjoy and look forward to doing! Hate running? Take up a form of Pilates or Yoga instead. I´m obsessed with boxing at the moment, I can´t wait to start at my new local Hot Yoga in my new hood, and I´m looking forward to weekly runs when I feel like it (because I want to – not because I have to).

3. BREAKFAST IS KING

Gone are the days of grabbing something on-the-go. Having a proper, wholesome breakfast, and treating it as the most important meal of the day, will not only kick start your metabolism and fuel you for longer – it will quash any needs to snack (too much snacking is never good for anyone) and make you feel, and look better. Also, make time for your breakfast; I know it might not be tempting to wake up 10-20 minutes earlier, but your body, and tummy, will thank you for eating slowly and calmly, setting you up for the day.

My go-to breakfast? I kickstart every morning with a hot water, lemon and cayenne pepper concoction, followed by a green juice, and either a protein fuelled plate with poached eggs, salmon, spinach and avocado, savoury pancakes, or creamy Chia Oats Pudding, with a hard boiled egg on the side for extra fuel.

4. TAKING TIME OUT

Being mindful and stopping up every now and again after a long day or week, is more important than ever. We have so much technology, social engagements and general noise in our head – so those 10, 20 or even 60 minutes of taking some time out in a calm room, sitting on the floor, lying on your bed… is so important for your well-being. Meditation is proven to make you more relaxed and happy, and although I´m not saying it´s for everyone – it doesn’t hurt to try it! I personally like doing it via the Headspace app on my own in a quiet room, or you could even do some kind of time-out at a yoga class, or even a hike! Whatever works for you.

5. DRINK MORE WATER

This point seems pretty basic and self explanatory – but it´s surprisingly easy not to hydrate as much as our body needs it! Drinking enough water can help with everything from weight loss, energising your muscles (enabling a more effective workout), revitalising dry skin and boosts your natural glow (slows down the ageing process, basically) – and SO much more. Of course, there´s a lot of water in certain foods such as fruit and vegetables, but aside from that, you need to be drinking at least 2L of water a day, as well as your herbal teas. Do you find regular water boring? Infuse your water with your favourite citrus fruits, apple, mint, cucumber and berries (see below for a couple that I love). It´s delicious (and your body will thank you for it).

And there you have my top 5 tips to kick start a healthier lifestyle! Of course as with everything, you need to adapt and find what works for you – and you don´t even have to start all five things at once, even one is an amazing start! All of the above has been a gradual process for me and something which has taken me years to adjust to and make time for.

2016, let´s do this!
